Soul legend Al Green covers REM’s hit song “Everybody Hurts”

Soul icon Al Green, who has won 11 Grammy Awards and is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, releases a soulful interpretation of REM’s 1992 hit “Everybody Hurts” as his new single. did. While incorporating his gospel roots, he adds new depth and vulnerability, giving the song a warm, hopeful feeling.

Al Green says this about his new song.

“When we were recording Everybody Hurts in the studio, I felt a lot of pressure on the song and wanted to add a little bit of hope and light. Light can break through times of darkness. It’s always there.”

REM frontman Michael Stipe made the following comment:

“On behalf of the entire band, we couldn’t be more honored and grateful. We are truly humbled. This is a great moment for us.”

Al Green hit the studio in Memphis, Tennessee earlier this year. The members of the Hi Rhythm Section, consisting of Charles Hodges (organ), Leroy Hodges (bass), and Archie “Hubby” Turner (piano), reunite. Also featured are Will Sexton (guitar) and Steve Potts (drums) of Booker T. & the MG’s. The strings were once again arranged by Stax legend Lester Snell, and produced by Clay Jones.

Al Green’s “Everybody Hurts” is his new single, following his acclaimed cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” released in 2023. The previous single also featured RAYE, a British singer-songwriter who is currently making waves. The New York Times called it “a sumptuous reinterpretation of Lou Reed’s 1972 classic,” once again proving Al Green’s unparalleled talent for sentimental ballads.

R.EM.’s “Everybody Hurts” is included on their eighth album, Automatic For The People, released in 1992. It became a hit the following year as a single by an American alternative rock band, and has been used in numerous media such as commercials and movies.
