NIKI, a Jakarta-born singer-songwriter and producer currently based in Los Angeles, has announced that his third new album, “Buzz”, will be released on August 9th via 88rising. At the same time, they released the new single “Too Much Of A Good Thing” from the new album, which many fans have been waiting for.
This light new song, with ironic yet honest lyrics, naturally conveys the feeling of meeting a new love. Over her supple bass guitar and steady beat, she begins to sing: “Well, you look like you’re about to make me sad/And on good days I look like a tall flower in the dark,” she proclaims. The song was co-produced by NIKI’s friend and producer Ethan Gruska, who has previously worked with Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver and Kimbra.

NIKI talks about the new song “Too Much Of A Good Thing” as follows.
“This is a funny and sarcastic song about desire and imagination, and the excitement and irreverent playground they create. Sonically, I think it’s timeless, and it’s expressed in a groove that feels like it’s strutting in a moment of invincibility. I wrote it when I was listening to a lot of The Beatles. It was one of my early ideas and it influenced the whole album.”
“Buzz,” the third studio album by singer-songwriter and international artist NIKI, began with a sudden tremor at her inner core. The result is a collection of heart-tugging folk-rock songs. It crackles like a bonfire surrounded by close friends. “I was in the middle of an identity crisis,” the 25-year-old says of Buzz. “I did a lot of trial and error, and in the process I found different pieces of myself. Something just happened. I feel like I’m on the precipice of something like that, so I named it ‘Buzz.’
NIKI was a high school student in Jakarta, Indonesia, and things were rapidly progressing around him. When she was a student at the International Academy, she scribbled poems about her love sickness in English class and performed covers of American pop songs on her acoustic guitar on YouTube. With her six strings in hand, performing in front of her family and classmates and being cheered on, Nicole Zefanya rose to global stardom as her NIKI.
With over 3 billion streams worldwide, sold-out performances on multiple continents, big set stages at festivals around the world, the front row of Paris Fashion Week, and a soundtrack for a Marvel movie. NIKI has already built the career of a seasoned artist before the age of 25, including the most astonishing and confessional songs to be released in 2024.
Her songwriting on her new album, Buzz, is more intimate than ever. In the early sketches for the songs on Buzz, she took cues from other female artists who have paved her way, writing confessional, sincere lyrics. “Joni Mitchell is like my songwriting north star,” she says, citing notable uncompromising feminist artists such as Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon and Liz Phair. Matching the wandering spirit of her Buzz, NIKI cultivated her unique bouncy guitar approach.
To capitalize on this creative and personal transformation, she hired producers who have worked with some of her favorite contemporary singer-songwriters. She has hired Tyler Chester, who has written songs for Madison Cunningham and Sara Bareilles, and Ethan Gruska, whose collaborators include Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers. Her album “Buzz” echoes the intellect cultivated by NIKI, who bravely pursues her dreams, but is always willing to laugh when she stumbles.
