The tours we visited in February and March with ANORAK! were sold out and a huge success
“Will Anderson has sublimated everyday heartbreak into an overwhelming shoegaze and superpower pop anthem. A piece you should listen to at high volume.” Pitchfork (Best New Music)
Hotline TNT, a project led by Will Anderson based in New York, announced on June 20th that it will release its third album, Raspberry Moon, from Third Man Records. In addition, they released their pre-single single “Julia’s War” and their music video.
For them, who made their breakthrough with their album Cartwheel in 2023, this album is the largest scale ever, and is the first album produced by a full band. It is a masterpiece that transcends generations, packed with delicacy and romance, and the sorrow of youth and the growth of adults coexist. What’s more, it’s charming and sometimes humorous.
As production progresses in the studio of DIY contemporary hero Amos Pitsch (Tenement), Anderson faces a different situation than before. This is because a four-member band member who has been touring Hotline TNT for the past 10 months has surprisingly been accompanying the studio. Initially, Anderson intended to create a solo album, with the producer and the two of them gradually building up the songs, just like their previous album, Cartwheel. But they wanted to join guitarist Lucky Hunter, bassist Haylen Trammel and drummer Mike Ralston. Anderson broke.
Through the production of Raspberry Moon, Anderson faces a single belief. That means that Hotline TNT is now a “band” and the current members are that “band.” And the results are clear: this work is the most textured and energetic piece ever. Among the 11 songs, Hotline TNT-like themes such as farting and regret are continued, but what sticks to this work is a positive sense of newness and hope. This work resonates with the feeling of resisting a world that is becoming more and more closed, and preparing to welcome new friends into your own life. No matter how bad the past is, it’s music that will keep you looking forward.
Hotline TNT “Julia’s War”
The pre-sing single “Julia’s War” is an anthem depicting just-inspired love, with a simple, unspeakable chorus depicting hope for the future. The guitar combines warmth and sharpness, and gently draws you in the listener’s hearts. The song was titled in honor of the activities of their contemporary band, The Are Gutting A Body of Water.
Anderson said:
“In this age of incredible hooks and buried vocals, we took on things that no one in the shoegaze world could have done… Looking around the stadium, I told the audience, “Our voices will come together and reach.” The chorus of this straightforward TNT is unprecedented – when I tried to “do not hum” during the prototype stage, and it was a 100% failure rate.”
The music video for “Julia’s War” was directed by Johnny Frohman, and Anderson said:
“At the stage was to come up with ideas for the video, Johnny created a ‘full metal jacket-style shoegaze training camp’… It’s not the Marines, it’s Slow Corps. Edy Monica, Dan Licata, Peter Mills Weiss, and cast from New York’s comedy underground world formed a squad to let us participate in hard programs like pedalboard assembly and underwater vocal training.”
From the early days, rock and roll history was a prominent “talent to create one’s own sound.” In recent years, Moore’s Law has evolved, allowing studios with high-performance equipment to be easily used as easily as bedrooms. Making it by yourself is getting easier and easier. However, what is really important is to abandon your ego and persistence and create better things with trustworthy colleagues. Hotline TNT did just that with this work, Raspberry Moon. On this album, Will Anderson has the margins of falling in love with the world around him, and sings that feeling on songs full of hooks. There are many melodies that will make you want to hum.
