Lupe Fiasco has made a name for himself with his unique penmanship, assembling rhyming rhymes into lush literary stanzas. His new song, Cake, shows just how Lupe can do this. Over a dizzying instrumental by Soundtrakk, he combines complex internal rhymes and imperfect metaphors with the kind of flexibility only Lupe can achieve. Accompanied by Soundtrakk’s undulating melodies and old-school percussion, the loops claim to have the penmanship of Kurt Vonnegut and a vocabulary so large it will overwhelm your computer.

The new song “Cake” is the second single released ahead of the album. Along with the announcement of the new album release the other day, the first single “Samurai” was also released. The music video for this smooth and smart track, produced entirely by longtime collaborator and friend Soundtrakk (“Superstar”, “Kick, Push”, “HipHop Saved My Life”), has already been released.

The new album, “Samurai,” is Lupe’s first since his 2022 work, “DRILL MUSIC IN ZION.” It is one of the most personal works in his discography, and he showcases surprising lyrics with multi-layered metaphors throughout the album.

Lupe says of the album:

“It’s not a full biography, but my personal experiences tie into every track. A lot of it is me on the record. I interweave my life as an artist. The word ‘Samurai’ means to serve, and it represents the need to serve others in the rap community in general that I’ve been a part of for so many years. Martial arts was my whole life before rap and it still plays a big role in my life. The album is me as well as inspired by the words of some of my favorite artists. The overall theme of the record speaks to the constant battle that you go through in the entertainment industry, that there’s something worth protecting.”

Lupe Fiasco (real name Wasal Muhammad Jayco) is a Chicago-born rapper and record producer who burst onto the scene in 2006 with his debut album, Food & Liquor.

At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, “Daydreamin'” from Food & Liquor won his first award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. After working with his own punk band, Japanese Cartoon, in 2011, his third album, Lasers, debuted at number one on the US album charts, making him one of the most important artists in the hip-hop world.

After that, 2022’s “Drill Music in Zion” received high praise from many media and critics, including NPR, Complex, and The FADER. His ninth album “Samurai” (released June 28th), produced by his ally Soundtrakk, is also attracting a lot of attention. Lupe, who has studied martial arts such as karate and kendo since childhood and has a deep knowledge of Japanese culture such as anime and games, also teaches “Rap Theory and Practice” as a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to his musical activities, he is also active in many areas and is committed to the community organization he founded.
