Summer Whales will release her first CD on Wednesday, July 17th!

Summer Whales, a classical alternative rock band from Kyoto formed in August 2022 and consisting of Aoi (Vo.Gt.) and Ryoga Kubo (Gt.), will release their first EP, “Doughy,” on July 17th.

Immediately after forming, they released four consecutive digital singles each month, wowing radio stations, CD shops, and live houses across the country with their sophisticated musical sense that is hard to believe for a newcomer, and they even appeared at SUMMER SONIC 2023 and SYNCHRONICITY’24.Now, they have completed their first physical album.

The five-song album includes the four-on-the-floor dance number “Stroller” (pre-release on IGT on Wednesday, June 19th) with its intoxicating, mellow groove, and the catchy rock number “Crack!” with its explosive, aggressive guitar. While based on alternative rock, Summer Whales freely incorporates a variety of music from across the world and across eras, and is confident in its musical style, which is not bound by existing frameworks.

Aoi (Vo.) was in charge of mixing and mastering herself, and even supervised the jacket and artwork, making this a meticulous album that showcases her creative side and embodies her DIY spirit down to the smallest details.

Be sure to check out their latest album, “Doughy,” which is like a calling card for Summer Whales and is filled with their signature “ennui-filled, husky vocals” and “classical alternative rock mixed with pop arrangements.”

■Profile

With a sound reminiscent of 90s alternative grunge rock and overseas indie music, and an languid, husky vocal, they have been a hot topic on radio stations and live houses across the country since the beginning of their activities, thanks to their outstanding compositional sensibility and cool live performances.

The songs, which are a mix of stylish, edgy rock and catchy pop arrangements, are packed with high-quality melodies and developments that will take your breath away even after just one listen. The seamless transition between English and Japanese lyrics, sung with a pleasant pronunciation, is also one of the attractions.

Summer Whales – “Pizza or Mac”

■Biography

The group was formed in July 2022 as part of the light music club at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. After releasing digital singles four months in a row since their formation, they have attracted attention, including being aired on radio stations around the country and being selected for playlists on subscription services.

In October 2022, they were selected through a public audition to appear on TENDOUJI’s nationwide tour. This will be their first live performance. After that, they will continue to perform live in the Kanto and Kansai regions, and in May 2023, they will release their first Music Video, “Pizza or Mac.”

In August 2023, they entered “Can I go to Summer Sonic!? 2023” and passed the selection. They will appear at “SUMMER SONIC 2023”.

In January 2024, support guitarist Ryoga Kubo officially joined the band. In April, they held their first independent event, “MiX TAPE NIGHT,” at Kyoto GROWLY, attracting about 100 people. After this live performance, bassist Daiki Tsunoda left the band, leaving them with the current two-person lineup.

In July, they announced the release of their long-awaited first physical album, “Doughy,” and will hold a release tour in Tokyo and Kyoto.
