The Smashing Pumpkins, the legendary, two-time Grammy-winning alternative rock band, have announced that they will release their new album, Aghori Mhori Mei, on August 2nd. Their 13th album, Aghori Mhori Mei, is a testament to the prolific nature of frontman Billy Corgan’s work over the past decade. Last year, the band released the third and final chapter of their epic, adventurous rock opera, ATUM, a sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina / The Machine Of God. While some artists might take a breather after producing an ambitious, critically acclaimed triple album, Corgan immediately returned to the studio to write, produce and record the 10-track album. Corgan, who is prolific creatively, had declared that he would release a new album in 2024, and the band has completed recording the album “Aghori Mhori Mei” while on an extensive tour.

“In writing the songs for the new album, I was intrigued by the old adage, ‘you can never go home again,'” Corgan says. “Personally I believe that’s true, but I thought, what if we just tried? Not as a sentimental look back at the past, but as a way of moving forward. We were trying, with success or failure, to determine whether the way we made music circa 1990-1996 still felt distinctly inspiring today.”

The new album is the first album produced by the new band after the departure of the previous guitarist Jeff Schroeder. It is a 10-song, 45-minute work. New guitarist Kiki Wong will join the North American tour starting at the end of July.

“We’ve been playing this rock ‘n’ roll game for 36 years, succumbing to other people’s judgments about what the first song should be, what the first statement should be, for that one moment. We felt the right way to listen to this album was as a complete body of work. Ten songs, about 45 minutes. We want our fans to decide if what we’ve accomplished is what we set out to do, if we’ve got it back to where we started. If this album has allowed us to come home again.”

“It feels good. Standing on stage and playing with the original band members feels natural, like riding a bike. It’s a good reincarnation of the band, and we’re still full of power and energy. I think we’ve always been different to other bands, the songs Billy writes and the way the band plays. The dynamics of the songs, heavy, quiet and everything in between, cover a lot of different styles and have a unique sound.”
