CHTHONIC, a giant of the Taiwanese metal scene, has been on the verge of activity for several years, will release a new music video, “Endless Aeons” on April 28th!
CHTHONIC has previously released albums such as “Mirror Of Retribution” (2009), “Takasago Army” (2011), and “Butik” (2013), and has appeared at large festivals such as “Ozzfest”, “Download Festival”, and “Wacken Open Air”, and tours in Europe and the United States. However, since vocalist Freddy Lim was elected to Taiwan’s Parliament in 2016, the band has been underrepresented.
For the past decade, Freddy has been devoted to his work in the National Assembly, and other members have also worked on their respective projects, so CHTHONIC only occasionally performs large-scale performances within Taiwan. Although works such as Battlefields Of Asura (2018) and Pattonkan (2023) were released, live shows overseas have almost stopped. Meanwhile, declassified documents revealed a tragic and unknown past of Freddy’s own family in 2023. Shocked by this fact, Freddy decided to bring the curtain down on her eight years of legislative work and announced that she would not aim for re-election. He then ended his term as a member of parliament in 2024.
The Taiwanese title “Hyakumanben” for the new song “Endless Aeons,” released last month, is a Buddhist term and refers to a ritual in which many people gather to chant sutras to break the work. “CHTHONIC’s music has always talked about reincarnation and disaster — it’s very religious,” says Freddy. He also wrote, “I’ve been portraying the disasters that Taiwan has had many times before, but when I found out that it actually had been falling on my family, it became personal. From there I began writing “Endless Aeons” and other songs. “, “When will this disaster end? If I could start again, can I live without regrets? This song is both a question and an answer at the same time.”
“It sounds complicated, but it’s actually a very simple song. That’s the intention behind this song is to answer complex questions in simple words,” he said. Bassist Doris Yeh then stunned the members with this song, singing in Taiwanese enka style. Doris says, “After years of practice, I did my best, but to be honest, I was very nervous when I was recording.”
The music video is connected to past music videos such as “Defenders Of Bu-Tik Palace Acoustic Version,” as well as music videos such as “Kaoru,” “Millennia’s Faith Undone,” and “Pattonkan.” The characters are victims of the February 28 Incident in 1947, and fall into a hellish reincarnation and continue to make sacrifices even after reincarnation. In “Endless Aeons,” he is reincarnated again, passes through the tunnel of time and falls to the CHTHONIC live venue — which means that the chain of reincarnation has been cut off.
In addition to releasing a new song, “Endless Aeons,” CHTHONIC is currently working on creating new songs, and suggests that they may perform live overseas again in the future.
