Momoko Kikuchi Profile
In 1984, she made her screen debut as the heroine of the movie “Pantsu no Ana” (Anatomy of the Pants), and in the same year, she also debuted as a singer in “Seishun no Ijiwaru” (The Meaningful Youth). She gained popularity as an idol, and in 1985, she performed at the Nippon Budokan at the age of 17, the youngest performer at the time, and released “Graduation” that same year, which was her first to reach number one on the Oricon Weekly Chart, and since then, seven consecutive releases have topped the Oricon weekly charts. Since her debut as an idol singer, she has won numerous awards, including the New Artist Award at the 26th Japan Record Awards, the Japan Record Sales Award, and the Elan d’or Awards New Artist Award.
The worldview created by composer Tetsuji Hayashi, who was responsible for almost all of the songs from that time, was different from idol songs in the 1980s, but in recent years, the boom in Japanese city pop, mainly overseas, has led to a reevaluation of the songs, and the cover of “Blind Curve” from the album “OCEAN SIDE” has become a hot topic overseas. Furthermore, in July 2021, all of the songs from that time were made available on music streaming services, and the following month, Momoko Kikuchi was featured in the popular re-edit series “Showa Groove” by producer/DJ Night Tempo. Not only the popular singles, but many of the songs continue to fascinate listeners around the world.
2024 marks the 40th anniversary of her debut as a singer. In April, her debut month, Momoko Kikuchi released the EP “Eternal Harmony,” which she produced entirely by herself. In May, her birthday month, she held a solo concert at the Gloria Chapel of Shinagawa Church of Christ. In September, she is scheduled to release her best album “Eternal Best” to commemorate her 40th anniversary.
