The live recording of the concert held at Shibuya eggman on July 14, 1981 by THE ROOSTERS, the four original members: Shinya Oe (vocals, guitar), Hiroyuki Hanada (vocals, guitar), Tomio Inoue (bass), and Junji Ikebata (drums), has been remastered in 2024 and will be released on CD and LP exclusively at Tower Records.

This documentary is packed with the charms of THE ROOSTERS, who were menacingly “leaning forward” and full of thrills and energy on July 14, 1981, shortly after the release of their second album “THE ROOSTERS a-GOGO” and fourth single “GIRL FRIEND.” It will once again inspire fans to think, “Live performances are the best.” There are no studio recordings, and many covers of famous songs not included on the original albums are also valuable.

The first show kicked off with “Everything’s Goes On,” a song not included in the album, written with English lyrics based on the Velvet Underground’s “We’re Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together.”

The album includes the lead single “ONE MORE KISS” from the 2nd album “THE ROOSTERS a-GOGO”, its coupling song “DISSATISFACTION”, the 4th single “GIRL FRIEND”, the cover of Sunhouse “BACILLUS CAPSULE” and “FLY”. The cover of Dr. Feelgood is a live staple but has no studio recordings, and “SHE DOES IT RIGHT” is also a delight, not included on the album. From the 1st album “THE ROOSTERS”, “MONA (I NEED YOU BABY)”, a masterpiece by Bo Diddley and also covered by The Rolling Stones on their first album, as well as original songs such as “New Cedric”, “FOOL FOR YOU”, and the debut single “Rosie”, which are live staples from their Kyushu days. “BYE BYE MY GIRL”, which closed the 1st show, has no studio recordings, but is a staple of the climax of the live show.

The second show will feature a cover of “TELSTAR,” a worldwide hit by The Tornados from their second album, “THE ROOSTERS a-GOGO,” a famous instrumental cover of The Ventures’ cover; “COME ON,” a Chuck Berry cover featuring (presumably) Shinya Oe playing blues harp; “FADE AWAY,” an original song written by Shinya Oe; “I’M A KING BEE,” a cover of Slim Harpo (James Moore); “I’M A MAN,” a cover of Bo Diddley’s signature song, also known as a cover by The Yardbirds;

Many original songs were also performed, including “SITTING ON THE FENCE” and “DISSATISFACTION,” the coupling track of their third single “ONE MORE KISS.”

From the first album “THE ROOSTERS,” the album includes a cover of Bo Diddley’s masterpiece “MONA (I NEED YOU BABY),” which is also famously covered by The Rolling Stones, and the debut single “Rosie“, its coupling track “Let’s Fall in Love,” which borrows the Japanese title from Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You,” also known for covers of The Rolling Stones and Muddy Waters, the second single “A Helpless Love Song,” a cover of Eddie Cochran’s “C’ MON EVERYBODY,” and a delightful selection of blues, R&B standards and 50’s pop songs also covered by The Rolling Stones.

Although not included on the album, it is also a rare opportunity to hear the live staple “LEATHER BOOTS” and the live staple “SHE DOES IT RIGHT”, a cover of Dr. Feelgood’s song.

The encore ended with “TEQUILA”, a cover of The Champs’ classic song that was the first track on their first album, “DO THE BOOGIE”, a cover of Sunhouse’s song that was also on their first album (lyrics by Toshiyuki Shibayama, music by Makoto Ayukawa), “LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR”, a rock cover of Connie Francis’ love song that was on their second album, and “BYE BYE MY GIRL”, a staple of live climaxes but not included on any albums that were not recorded in studio. The set list was quite different between the first and second shows, with only four songs overlapping, including singles.

As a bonus track, the rehearsal recording from the live show at Shibuya eggman on July 14, 1981 (before the 1st show) is included. You can listen to the performance of 7 songs, mainly popular songs that were performed at both the 1st and 2nd shows, such as “ROSIE”, while adjusting instruments, microphones, and equipment.

(THE ROOSTERS, THE ROOSTERZ)HP:https://columbia.jp/roosters/

The band was formed in 1979 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, by four members: Shinya Oe (vocals), Hiroyuki Hanada (guitar), Tomio Inoue (bass), and Junji Ikebata (drums). They debuted with the single “Rosie” in November 1980. In the same month, they released their first album, “THE ROOSTERS.”

As the band’s name, derived from the blues classic Willie Dixon’s “Little Red Rooster,” suggests, they played original songs and Western rock covers such as those by the Rolling Stones with a simple beat, but gradually moved closer to a new wave sound. In 1982, the drummer was replaced, and Jun Shimoyama (g) joined around this time. From around 1983, when Oe’s health deteriorated, Hanada and Shimoyama continued to play the main role, and Oe took a break after releasing “φ (PHY)” in 1984. The band itself broke up in 1988, but each member is still active today.
