Monogatary.com is a novel submission site where users can freely submit “stories” to “topics” given by the site’s management every day, and have fun reacting to them in various ways, such as adding illustrations and comments. The past contest “Monogatary 2019” hosted by the site attracted a lot of attention, such as the birth of “YOASOBI,” a unit that turns novels into music, which has been extremely successful, with their hit song “Idol” reaching number one on the global charts.

For the grand prize-winning work from the first story installment, “Yekatashi Touka” (written by Kakipi), a manga introduction to the work has been made into a manga by Naoto Tsushima and released under the production of Bandai Namco Pictures.

This project solicited submissions from users based on illustrations of the toys, asking them to write torisetsu (instruction manuals) for the toys, and then a story based on the grand prize winning torisetsu.
The grand prize-winning story, “Reformer Touka,” tells the story of Hitomi, the main character, who is trying to put an end to everything. A mysterious girl named Touka suddenly appears before her. This is a thrilling fantasy story about a girl who uses a rhinoceros beetle-shaped toy to fight to eliminate bullying from Japan. It is a tale of redemption that cleverly reflects the toy’s instruction manual, which is at the heart of the project.
The introduction to the series is an original manga written by Naoto Tsushima, who is popular for his fascinating robot manga and won the Encouragement Award and Big Step Award at the 2nd Big Rookie Awards sponsored by Enix for “Beware of Extreme Love.” The manga greatly expands the worldview of the series and makes it a fun work that can be enjoyed as a hero that we would want to have close to us.
